Known best, of course, for the famed Flatiron Building, the Flatiron District has always been a ground-breaking neighborhood in New York, architecturally and otherwise. Built in 1851 as an Italian row house, 50 West 22nd Street was soon altered to meet the needs of the district – industrial space.
Functioning as first a box factory then a horse and carriage house. But, the 1920s brought the prevailing winds of modernity, sweeping the antiquated handsome cab from the streets, replacing it with automobiles and a massive sub network and 50 West 22nd Street became no more than a stylized warehouse.
Not for long, however. The rise of the bohemian converted the cheap warehouse space into artist lofts when the Flatiron was known as the Photo District, on account of the many photographers taking advantage of the large and un-partitioned spaces. The section of the building in which Café 50 West is housed, on the other hand, bore the honorary title of “Hot Dog Vender Distribution Center” until last year, when construction began on Café 50 West.
Though the neighborhood has changed drastically over the years, Café 50 West tries to preserve those attributes that made and makes the Flatiron one of the best places in Manhattan to live and work. With a family oriented atmosphere, chic but cozy décor, a friendly staff, and delicious, affordable cuisine Café 50 West is quickly becoming a favorite of the Flatiron. Come in and see why everyday from 11am to 10pm.
